Contents: Clarithromycin USP 500mg

Indications
:
Clarithromycin is indicated in adults and children 12 years and older.
Clarithromycin Tablets are indicated for treatment of the following infections caused by susceptible organisms Indicated include:
Lower respiratory tract infections for example: acute and chronic bronchitis, and pneumonia.
Upper respiratory tract infections for example: sinusitis and pharyngitis.

Dosage: Patients with respiratory tract/skin and soft tissue infections
Adults: The usual dose is 250 mg twice daily although this may be increased to 500mg twice daily in severe infections. The usual duration of treatment is 6 to 14 days.
Children older than 12 years: As for adults.
Children younger than 12 years: Use of clarithromycin tablets are not recommended for children younger than 12 years. Clinical trials have been conducted using clarithromycin paediatric suspension in children 6 months ti 12 years of age. Therefore, children under 12 years of age should use clarithromycin paediatric suspension (granules for oral suspension).


Administration
:
May be taken with food: Ensure adequate fluid intake.

Contraindications
:
Hypersensitivity to macrolide antibiotic drugs or to any of its excipients. Concomitant administration of clarithromycin and ergot alkaloids (e.g. ergotamine or dihydroergotamine) is contraindicated, as this mayresult in ergot toxicity.

Special Precautions
: Use of any antimicrobial therapy, such as clarithromycin, to treat H. pylori infection may select for drug-resistan organisms. The physician should not prescribe clarithromycin to pregnant women without carefully weighing the benefits against risk, particularly during the first three months of pregnancy.

Adverse Drug Reactions
: Diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia, rash, dizziness, headache, photosensitivity.

Drug Interactions
: May potentiate the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Blood glucose disturbances including hyper- & hypoglycemia w/ antidiabetic agents. Decreased absorption
w/ antacids containing Al & Mg, Fe sulfate, sucralfate, metal cations eg Fe & multivit prep w/ Zn or didanosine.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA):
Category C: Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus.
